Try Something New

Basic Soap Making

Making your own soap can be a fun hobby, and can also be very eco-friendly and cost-effective. As you learn the process in this class, we will create a small batch of soap together. You will learn important safety measures when working with lye, and we will talk about different oils that can be used in the process. Take your soap with you, along with instructions to finish at home and recipes to use in the future.

Beginning Spanish

This popular course is a great way to learn the basics of the Spanish language in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Learn pronunciation, vocabulary, verbs, sentence structures and more in this four-week course. Through practice, reading and conversation, you will learn Spanish in the same way your instructor learned to speak English. Homework assignments are short and speed your progress so you move quickly through the course. Class size will be small to ensure individual attention. Please bring a portable Spanish-English dictionary, notebook and pen to class with you. Your course fee includes a textbook. Please remember that learning a new language requires practice and dedication, so attendance at all class sessions is important.

Introduction to Chess

The game of chess is one of man’s great creations. The rules can seem arbitrary to a beginner, but are actually the product of over 1,000 years of tinkering and refining. In this new class, all ages and levels are welcome to learn the game, even if you have never touched a chess piece before. Each week you will receive handouts and instruction before battling against a partner. While playing you will learn common patterns, how to methodically build a position, set traps and analyze variations. Your course fee will include a chess set to keep.

For thousands of years, families have taken care of their loved ones at home after death, and that option is still available. By choosing to reclaim the tradition of caring for your own family members at death, you provide not only a final act of love for the departed, but a first step toward healing for those who remain. In this course, we will discuss the legality of home funerals, logistical details and the importance of planning. Sarah will provide a description of green, or natural, burial options, and conclude with a role-playing demonstration on one of your classmates, learning the practical aspects of a home funeral.
