Centering Meditation

Calendar Sep 9, 2019 at 7 pm, runs for 6 weeks

As an introduction to centering meditation, this class is designed to give a weekly silent time and still space for the purposes of contemplative centering. Instructor Philip Meckley will provide students instruction on centering meditation and contemplative silence. Please bring a comfortable cushion to sit on the floor during meditation. If physical requirements limit your ability to sit on the floor, meditation seated in a chair is perfectly appropriate. You need not belong to a specific religious discipline in order to participate.

Chess Club Series 1

with Anatoly Karpov Chess School

Calendar Sep 10, 2019 at 6 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Playing the game of chess offers players a unique opportunity for lifelong learning including strategy, tactics and concentration. Each week, chess instructors Dwight Ford of Anatoly Karpov School of Chess and Glenn Gustitus will support players with handouts and encourage the use of strategy through instruction before club play. While playing, you will learn common patterns, how to methodically build a position, set traps and analyze variations depending on your level of play.

Instructor Dwight Ford is the current President of the Anatoly Karpov School of Chess in Lindsborg. He helps with teaching kids and adults beginning chess fundamentals and tactics. He manages the "Social Chess Hour" in Lindsborg on Monday evenings for adults and is a volunteer with the Salina Area Chess Club. He teaches a tactics class in the fall for middle school aged youth. Instructor Glenn Gustitus holds a Master of Arts in psychology and specialized in child and adolescent counseling. He has been playing and teaching the benefits of chess as president of the Salina Area Chess Club. He is the social outreach committee chair with the Anatoly Karpov Chess School of Lindsborg.

In this series of Guided Imagery meetings, you will learn how guided imagery works, discover your “personal place”, meet your “guide” and learn how to anchor to seek inner wisdom when you need it. Each Guided Imagery meeting will focus on a specific topic and compliment one another, take one or all three.

Introduction to Chess

with Anatoly Karpov Chess School

Calendar Sep 3, 2019 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

Chess is an international game of strategy played by two people on a 64 square board of alternating colors using 16 pieces each. The rules can seem arbitrary to a beginner but are actually the product of more than 1,000 years of tinkering and refining. In this introductory chess class, all are welcome to learn the basics of gameplay. Even if you have never touched a chess piece before. You will be introduced to the pieces and their movements, receive handouts and instruction before battling against a partner at the end of class. From this class, new chess players are invited to continue learning, practicing and refining their skills by enrolling in Chess Club. Bring $15 to class if you wish to purchase a labeled tournament chess board to take home.

Rolling the Dice

Learn the secrets of machining and how to use sharp cutting tools to make precise and accurate cuts with SATC instructor David Larson. Machining is used to create simple and unique shapes in a variety of materials. During Rolling Dice class, you will be introduced to the basic fundamentals to safely make a precision square with chamfered corners. You will add the dots to your dice to finalize your project. The processes used for this project will involve plain and face milling, angular cutting and spot facing. This course is intended for individuals who have the desire to learn manual milling as an introductory skill or to complement their metalworking skills. Please bring a calculator and shop gloves. For your safety wear closed toe shoes, long pants and cotton/denim or canvas clothing. Participants with long hair will need to pull it back securely.

David Larson recently retired from the military where he taught welding, machining and HVAC. Machining on a lathe or mill is enjoyable and fun to teach. Larson has lived in the Salina area since 2001 and enjoys serving the community. He looks forward to providing instruction in the skills that have served him well in his own career.
