Basic Cake Decorating

Calendar Mar 28, 2018 at 6 pm, runs for 2 weeks

In the first session, you will learn basic cake icing, bordering a cake and writing on a cake. In the second session, you will learn basic flowers: roses, daisies and leaves. For each class, you will need to bring two (8 inch) cake layers that have been frozen, a small angled spatula, a straight edge scraper, a small spray bottle and a box or container to take your cake home in. Your course fee includes icing, cake boards, bags and tips.

You’re not a real wine lover until you’ve made your own! As a class, you will make a small batch of homemade juicebased wine that will knock your socks off! Everyone in the class will make and take a bottle of wine you can finish at home. You will learn about the tools and techniques of wine-making and safety. Jammie has been making homemade wine for six years and will give you some bonus recipes too. Participants must be at least 21 years of age.

South Indian Cuisine

The food of South India is surprisingly light and refreshing, using plenty of fresh vegetables, curry leaves, fresh coconut, tamarind, and green and red dried chilies. Rice is an everyday staple, but South India is famous for dosas, thin Indian savory crêpes made of rice and urad dal along with idlis steamed rice dumplings. Sambar or rasam, a soup-like lentil dish, is a must! There are endless varieties of vegetable dishes such asporiyals, Indian pickles and chutneys. The menu will be a mix of recipes from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. In addition you will taste Hyderabadi chicken korma, jeera rice, sambar served with idlis and idli kara podi/chili masala, dosas served with peanut chutney and potato masala, vegetable poriyal, and pappads. Bring your appetite and come taste the spices of South India.

Spring & Summertime Salads

Barry and Meta West will be in the kitchen preparing a variety of salads perfect for your spring and summer menus. You will begin by tasting a five-star southern-inspired layered salad followed by a wild rice and grilled chicken recipe from the Kirby House Restaurant in Abilene. Next, you will enjoy a marinated green bean and potato salad that is sure to become one of your favorite salads of the summer--and it’s much lower in fat and calories than most! Finally, you will try a salad that doubles as an appetizer and a “salad bread”--an oven-toasted bread topped with garden veggies.
